Mmatlou Kalaba (MA)
Mmatlou is an independent consultant specialising in international trade and socio-economic issues. His work also focuses on capacity-building in the same areas and on applied analytical and methodological tools. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Oklahoma State University and is currently pursuing doctoral studies with the University of Pretoria.
Prior to becoming a consultant, he worked
as a trade economist at Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies, where
his responsibilities included bilateral and multilateral trade
analysis, tariff and non-tariff analysis, review of tariff policies and
related competitiveness issues. Previously, he was employed by the
National Agricultural Marketing Council and the National Department of
Agriculture as an economist and senior economist respectively.
He is presently involved in a number of projects, mainly bilateral
trade research and analysis involving South African Customs Union
members, Kenya, the European Union and Tanzania. Other projects include
the South African quarterly trade data synthesis, the Southern African
Development Community (SADC) mid-term review, the evaluation of export
diversification within the context of the South African government’s
‘butterfly’ trade strategy, the development of the SADC trade database,
and a diagnostic trade integration study of Lesotho.
