Sarah Jones, MPhil (UCT)
Sarah’s areas of research specialisation are socio-political research, arts and media, diversity issues, children’s rights, youth work and education. In 2004, Sarah earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge, with a specialisation in political philosophy. In 2008, she completed an MPhil in Diversity Studies (with distinction) in the Sociology Department at the University of Cape Town. Following this, Sarah took up a fellowship in the Sociology and Visual and Environmental Studies Department at the University of Harvard.
Sarah joined Mthente as an associate in 2009 to assist in reviewing the strategic value and impact of the Semester Study Abroad Programme at UCT for the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO). She is currently assisting Mthente with a review of the impact and value of international full degree students at UCT for the same office.
In 2005, Sarah worked as the Media and Communications Coordinator for the International Children’s Trust (ICT), an international charity based in the UK. Here, she was responsible for developing ICT’s media and campaign strategies, and developing educational, promotional and member resources. In 2006, Sarah worked as the Project Director at Index Research, producing educational and promotional films for a range of non-governmental organisations in the Western Cape. Sarah has also participated in a range of research at the University of Cape Town for the Department of Social Anthropology and Institute for Intercultural and Diversity Studies of Southern Africa (iNCUDISA), which have all been investigating issues of race and racism at the university, at staff and student levels.
In addition to her research interests, Sarah is an independent filmmaker, producing and directing both fictional and documentary films for a range of audiences and formats.
