Debbie will graduate with her Master’s degree in Sociology (Development) from the University of Cape Town in December 2009. Her thesis investigated the barriers to employment for unskilled workers in Site C, Khayelitsha and in Du Noon, Milnerton, looking specifically at whether or not the spatial mismatch theory applies. She will be working with Mthente as an intern from November to mid-December 2009.

Debbie has been very involved in development work in South African communities. In particular, she established and co-ordinated a women’s HIV/AIDS support group and a social responsibility tour in Khayelitsha. Recently, she also assisted a Rwandan NGO in setting up a monitoring and evaluation system for its projects.

Debbie is passionate about empowering others through grassroots development work. She looks forward to gaining experience and building a career in South Africa.
