South Africa has a critical role to play in Africa’s development, in view of its successful political post-apartheid transition to democracy, its exceptional (by African standards) performance in respect to the Millennium Development Goals, and its relative wealth and expertise. This is also reflected in its determination to foster regional collaboration and the promotion of economic growth, peace, and stability in Africa. In addition, even though South Africa has the biggest and strongest economy in Africa, it is faced with similar challenges and problems that plague other African countries, notably high unemployment as well as widespread poverty and social inequality. |
