The Atlantic Philanthropies, which currently supports a wide range of non profit organisations that promote human rights and facilitate access to justice in South Africa, is closing its operations worldwide in 2016.

As part of its exit strategy, Atlantic has commissioned Inyathelo to investigate the feasibility of establishing a domestic human rights trust with a challenge grant of R50 to R60 million. To this end, Mthente developed a semi-structured survey questionnaire plus schedules for two focus groups for both potential donors and grantees. We held interviews with five key informants from South African human rights trusts, as well as with ten potential donors in South Africa and the UK.
