In August 2011, Mthente was awarded a contract by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) to assist with the development of the Consolidated Annual Report on Municipal Performance in terms of section 48 of the Municipal System Act for the 2008/2009 financial year.

In light of substantial evidence that many South African students are underachieving in primary school, the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation has developed a model for a pilot primary school programme that will aim to improve primary education in South Africa. To test their proposed approach, the Foundation commissioned Mthente in August 2011 to undertake a feasibility study of the pilot programme.

In August 2011, FEDICS, the sole caterer at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) dining halls, commissioned Mthente to conduct a survey to test perceptions of students towards the catering services provided by FEDICS within the UCT residence dining halls.

In December 2010 and January 2011, Mthente carried out a climate and culture survey at one of Engen’s key refineries. The aim of the study was to assess behaviour, attitudes, perceptions and levels of commitment among Engen’s employees and managers at the refinery.

Mthente was commissioned by Draftfcb Social Marketing to conduct a revision and reformation of the Electricity Act as part of Operation Khanyisa’s attempts to curb electricity theft in the country. The study centred on a review of existing legislation across eleven South African Municipalities.

Smaller enterprises have largely been unable to access the real benefits from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which offers Sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to the US market for clothing and textile products. BEDCO, therefore, commissioned Mthente to explore the possibility of developing supply chain linkages between SMME’s and larger manufacturers - both Multinational Corporations and South African based manufacturers -- in Lesotho’s clothing and textile sector.

In May 2009, Mthente was commissioned by the Umthombo Wesizwe Children’s Project to monitor and evaluate the impact of the project’s pilot programme on its beneficiaries. Umthombo’s vision as an NGO is to “provide a platform for pre-teen children from diverse communities in South Africa to develop an identity that will enable them to evolve as ethical leaders within a multicultural society.”

In line with the BEE Act of 2004 and the focus on the need to accelerate enterprise development projects between big and small companies in the BBBEE Codes of Good Practices, Mthente worked with the Executive Manager, Chairperson of the Board and mentors of CLOTEX to build an enterprise development strategy for the organisation.

In November 2008, Mthente assisted the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC) in developing a Business Plan for a Competitiveness Programme that will aim to empower local fashion designers to become fashion entrepreneurs and survive in a competitive industry.
