Case Study: Georgetown University (McDonough School of Business) – Workshop Facilitation
On 30 July 2009, Mthente Research and Consulting Services partnered with Georgetown University (McDonough School of Business) to offer a free “Leadership in Business” workshop for business leaders in Cape Town at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business. Mthente coordinated the logistics and invitations for the workshop, while Georgetown facilitated the session itself.
The half day of lectures and activities sought to enhance
participants’ understanding of leadership while providing a forum for
discussion and an opportunity for networking with other outstanding
Cape Town business leaders.
Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business provides an
executive master’s degree programme in leadership (EML) to senior
professionals. They have a 14-month curriculum that meets for about 32
hours per month, and includes three residencies, one of which is
international. This year their residency is in South Africa.
The seminar was conducted in six segments of between 30 to 35 minutes
each, including:
- Segment one: An introduction to leadership, including various leadership models.
- Segment two: Listening.
- Segment three: Negotiation.
- Segment four: Public speaking.
- Segment five: Strategic planning.
- Segment six: How to develop a personal leadership model.
The workshop was facilitated by a team of three individuals from the
United States:
- Patty Bucheck: A certified career management coach who committed her professional expertise to the preparation and inspiration of emerging global leaders. She is a veteran career coach who is effective in one-on-one and group learning scenarios, working primarily with adult learners who are graduate students in one of the top business schools in the Unites States.
- John Scicchitano: An international development expert committed to international economic development. He has 12 years of experience working in East and West Africa, serving in leadership positions in the non-profit, private, and government sectors.
- Rob Wray: A businessman and military reservist who was trained as a nuclear engineer and began an entrepreneurial business career that included management positions in construction, manufacturing, energy and information technology.
The workshop attracted 29 participants from a wide variety of sectors
of business in Cape Town. Due to the very positive feedback from the
participants, the Georgetown facilitators and Mthente team are looking
into further possibilities for collaboration.
