Mthente was commissioned by the Cape Craft and Design Institute to conduct quantitative and qualitative research to investigate the state of basic visual art education in schools and communities in the Western Cape.

Within schools, the research focused on the general education band and how this impacts upon the numbers and quality of general education training certificate graduates that emerge for the creative industries as an economic sector.

The research included the development of a quantitative survey among 80 teachers/art educators in general schools, focus schools and art centres in the Western Cape.

Qualitative data was also obtained through in-depth stakeholder interviews with the creative sector, as well as focus groups with teachers, learners, crafters and community art centres in the Western Cape.
