Mthente has conducted trade policy research in a number of fields. The central research undertaking has been the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Trade and Investment Cooperation Project, carried out under the auspices of the South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA).

This study sought to identify barriers to trade and investment collaboration among the IBSA countries and to recommend ways in which they could be reduced or eliminated. The findings and recommendations of the research were presented to a national meeting hosted by Business Unity South Africa in November 2005.

Mthente also undertook an assessment of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) on the external perceptions of SACU. This was conducted through policy research and stakeholder analysis.
