Case Study: University of Cape Town (UCT) Sports Council – Strategic Planning Workshop Facilitation
In July 2009, the Sports Council of the University of Cape Town (UCT) commissioned Mthente to facilitate a one day sports bosberaad (workshop). The strategic planning workshop was held on 1 August 2009 with a broad range of sport constituencies, including members from the following: the Sports Council, the Department of Student Affairs, the Sports Union, the Sports Science Institute, the Student Representative Council, the School of Management Studies and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union.
The bosberaad was the beginning of a dialogue between the various
sporting constituencies of UCT about the future of sports at UCT. The
discussion was anchored by leading sports at UCT in the best interests
of the overall student body. To achieve this task the workshop was
facilitated through a “flexible agenda” and was directed by the space.
The one day workshop was characterised by a high level of participation
and took the format of facilitated plenary brainstorming sessions,
debates, small group activities and frank discussions.
After unpacking the strengths, weaknesses opportunities and strengths
of sports at UCT, the most pressing issue identified was to develop a
draft mission statement for sport at UCT, as all other decisions are
informed by the mission statement. It was decided that the Sports
Council of UCT would drive the process by taking ownership of
developing a draft mission statement that will be ready for
September/October 2009 Sport Council Strategic Planning Session.
Professor Meadows, the Chairperson of the Sports Council, concluded
the workshop by thanking all the participants for their participation,
energy and passion for sport at UCT. He also noted that the spirit of
consensus of the workshop had humbled him incredibly and that he was
excited that there are clear steps in place to take the process
forward.
